Six potential candidates to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea

Antonio Conte has overseen a poor defence of the Blues' title and now face missing out on the Champions League.

Antonio Conte is edging closer to the Chelsea exit after overseeing a first loss at Stamford Bridge vs Tottenham for 28 years.

The Italian has cut a dejected figure all season with the champions failing to muster a strong title defence.

Despite an FA Cup still to win and a year to run on his contract, the likelihood is a premature divorce between Conte and the club this summer.

There will be no shortage of candidates willing to take up the opportunity to turn the Blues around though. The criteria remains a mystery though, with calls for a more sustainable approach to success over hiring and firing the biggest names in management. Here are the six potential options for Roman Abramovich to consider:

  1. Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique
Out of work and refreshed after a season's break following his underrated work with Barcelona that brought two La Liga titles and a Champions League in three seasons.

The Spaniard endured a disastrous spell at Roma before that though, followed by a promising spell with Celta. But away from the confines of the Nou Camp, with elite-level talent, he may struggle to fully transmit his philosophy.

2. Massimiliano Allegri

Massimiliano Allegri
A distinctly unlikely option given Allegri's stock, though the Premier League may appeal to the Italian, especially with expectations low after such a dismal season.

Tactically versatile and proven under the same structure currently established at the Bridge, Allegri would represent an incredible replacement given the club's circumstances.

3. Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel

Linked with the Blues after his turbulent end at Borussia Dortmund, the German has reportedly held conversations with the club's hierarchy.

An intense, forward-thinking brand of football is attractive, though far from guaranteed to blend with the current squad, meaning extensive spending to match the manager's needs to establish his style.

4. Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers

Having rebounded well from his Liverpool exit by maintaining Celtic's success and adding more style, Rodgers must be considering a move back to the top end of European football, should the opportunity present itself.

His willingness to integrate youth and offer opportunities could sway the club, who are yet to fully utilise their exceptional academy.

5. Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti
A safe pair of hands and a calming influence, Carlo was harshly sacked by the Blues and currently out of work.
Unlike Conte, the former Milan, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich boss is accustomed and seemingly willing to work as a head coach without considerable input on signings.

6. Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard
A wildcard option and yet to complete his badges, though fully committed to pursuing a career as a manager after a glittering playing career.

A legend at the Bridge, fans would be delighted to welcome him back, though lack of any managerial experience would present a risk should the club be desperate for a quick fix. Quite whether Lampard would be willing to take such a high-profile job in the infancy of his managerial journey also remains to be seen.
