What Olivier Giroud said to Eden Hazard to inspire Chelsea comeback against Southampton
Olivier Giroud has revealed he issued Eden Hazard with a rallying cry to help inspire Chelsea’s sensational comeback against Southampton.
The relegation threatened Saints looked set to extend the champions’ miserable run of form when Jan Bednarek fired Mark Hughes’ side 2-0 ahead with half an hour remaining.

But two goals from super-sub Giroud and another from Hazard in an astonishing nine-minute burst helped Chelsea record only their second win in their last nine matches.
‘I said when I came on to Eden we need to fight until the end we need to believe,’ Giroud told Sky Sports.
‘I didn’t say we were going to score both me and him but I thought if we score it might put them in a bad position.’
Giroud has struggled to make an impact, particularly in the Premier League, since his January move from Arsenal.

Alvaro Morata was again preferred from the start at St Mary’s but Giroud is hopeful his rescue act on the south coast can finally kick-start his Chelsea career.
He said: ‘The beginning of the game was not what we wanted but in football you always have a chance to step up, to bounce back, so we showed great character and team spirit.

‘I used to say that football is an everlasting new beginning. You
always need to question yourself, I’ve been through some difficulties in
my career. I try to comeback stronger and it happened today. I’m
pleased for me and the team.
‘It was tough for us, the second for them was difficult. The most important thing is never give up, believe in our quality, play our game and I am proud of what we have done today with our amazing support.’
