David Luiz explains his free kick trick today at the Premier League Launch Day at London to Gary Neville.
Today is Premier League Launch Day on Sky Sports, so for about three hours now, there are all kinds of special features, interviews, etc going on live from London’s Billingsgate Market.
Blues head coach Antonio Conte and captain Gary Cahill were both involved as well, as was David Luiz, who walked Gary Neville and a keen apprentice through his special free-kick technique.
So basically, it’s a straight run-up, foot striking the ball low and as square as possible with the side-foot, then drawing the knee up to put top spin (i.e. “the dip”) on the ball to get it up and over the wall. There’s very little to no curve on the ball whatsoever, so the strike has to be very clean.
